At least 189 hurt in Turkish gas station blastReport: Explosion occurred as fuel truck filled station's tanks
ANKARA, Turkey (CNN) -- An explosion at a gas station in central Ankara on Saturday night injured at least 189 people, the country's minister of health said. Some of the injured were at a wedding on the third floor of the building that housed the gas station, Health Minister Recep Akdag said, but most were in and around the station when the explosion occurred. The bride and groom were among the injured, he said. The explosion happened about 9:20 p.m. [2:20 p.m. EDT] as a truck refilled the gasoline tanks at the station, located in a crowded residential neighborhood in the Turkish capital, CNN Turk reported. The fire was put out about three hours later, the network said. Three of those hurt suffered serious injuries and four were in critical condition, Akdag said. By Sunday morning, 46 people remained in hospitals, he said. Akdag and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the scene after the explosion, and went to the hospital where most of the victims are being treated, according to the network. Turkey's interior and justice ministers also went to the site of the explosion, according to CNN Turk. Officials were examining laws that allowed the wedding hall to be built atop the gas station, Akdag said. CNN Turk is a joint venture between Dogan Media Group, a leading Turkish media organization, and Atlanta, Georgia-based CNN. CNN Turk's Fatih Turkmenoglu contributed to this report.
