RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) -- A gunman's attempt to infiltrate the U.S. consulate in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Monday failed, U.S. officials in Riyadh told CNN.

At 6 a.m. (11 p.m. ET Sunday), an armed man unsuccessfully tried to ram the consulate's initial security gate, and police took him into custody, the officials said.

There was no information on the alleged gunman's nationality or motive.

No one was injured in the incident, according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in Riyadh.

Officials closed the consulate while assessing the situation and "security remained intact," the statement said. It also stated that the incident is under investigation. State Department officials said the consulate would reopen Tuesday.

A week ago, three near-simultaneous car bombings in Riyadh killed 25 people, including eight Americans, in addition to nine suicide bombers.

Others who participated in the attacks escaped unharmed, Saudi officials said. (Full story)
