KUWAIT CITY (CNN) -- A convoy of Iraqi military vehicles was spotted Thursday night heading for Umm Qasr, the Iraqi city four kilometers (2.4 miles) north of the border with Kuwait, the Al Anbaa newspaper reported Friday.

The U.S. military had no comment on the report.

The newspaper said the convoy disappeared into the city. Later two large explosions were heard in the area between 10 p.m. and midnight local time.

The convoy, said to be four kilometers (1.2 miles) long and driving with its lights off, was reported to be the largest seen moving in the area since 1977.
