KUWAIT CITY (CNN) -- Six suspects in last week's ambush shooting that killed an American military contract worker have led Kuwaiti police to a stash of weapons and ammunition, Kuwaiti officials said Thursday.

The suspects may have been planning to use the weapons for future attacks, the officials said.

Another American was injured in the January 21 ambush, which happened as the two contract workers were driving on the main road leading from the U.S. military's Camp Doha.

Police this week found the weapons -- which included several pistols, machine guns and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher -- in two houses and a mosque south of Kuwait City, according to the officials.

On Monday, an unknown Kuwaiti group named Al Daawa wal Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack in an e-mail sent to a Saudi newspaper.

The statement said the shooting was an act of jihad against American imperialism and was in response to the use of Kuwaiti soil to launch attacks against Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sami Mohammed Marzouk Obaid Al-Mutaryi, 25, a Kuwaiti civil servant, was extradited from Saudi Arabia two days after the attack, shortly after he was arrested while crossing the border.

The other five suspects are Kuwaiti citizens whom officials said were planning additional attacks. One of them gave the gun used in the ambush to Al-Mutaryi, the officials said.

Police matched fingerprints on the gun to Al-Mutaryi and matched tire tracks found near the scene to a Lexus he said he used in the attack, Kuwaiti government sources said.

Police continue to look for another suspect in the shooting.

Michael Rene Pouliot, 46, died at the scene. David Caraway, 37, who was driving the vehicle, was shot six times but survived. He is in a U.S. Army hospital in Germany.

The men were contract workers for the U.S. military under the auspices of Tapestry Solutions, a San Diego, California-based company that designs military software.

Authorities also have questioned a number of Kuwaitis who are suspected of having traveled to Afghanistan.

Kuwaiti officials said they will increase security across the country beginning Saturday, ahead of a potential U.S.-led war with neighboring Iraq.
