Two dozen wanted Palestinians held
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli forces clashed overnight with Palestinians in the West Bank as the troops rounded up more than two dozen wanted Palestinians, Israeli officials said Wednesday. According to Israeli military sources, a Palestinian man threw six explosive devices at the Israel Defense Forces troops operating in Tulkarem. The soldiers returned fire, hitting him. Tulkarem's governor said a 17-year-old boy was killed in the city's refugee camp by Israeli troops and a 15-year-old boy was killed in the city itself. The governor said Israeli soldiers were conducting house-to-house searches. His claims could not be independently verified. The IDF had no immediate comment. In the West Bank village of Kabatiya, Israeli military sources said a Palestinian man was shot and killed by IDF troops when he advanced on them and ignored orders to stop. Palestinian security sources said the man was mentally ill and got caught in the crossfire between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen. The incident came as the IDF had surrounded a house to arrest two wanted Palestinians from Tanzim -- Omar Abu Ayer and Muhammad Abu Ghai. The men later gave themselves up. Tanzim is the term Israeli officials use to describe militia members of Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement Military sources said Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and hand grenades were found in the house after their arrests. In their West Bank sweep, IDF troops arrested 25 Palestinians: • Six in Ramallah • One in Tulkarem • One in the village of A-Tur near Tulkarem • Eleven in the village of Awarta near Nablus • Three in Bethlehem -- two of them said to be Hamas activists • Three in Jenin In addition, IDF has shut down three departments of the Palestine Polytechnic University and the Islamic University in Hebron, citing the military's ongoing activity against the terror infrastructure. "These universities were used as a center for extreme religious and national activity by the terror organizations," IDF said. "This activity includes incitement, recruitment and training of hundreds of activists." The West Bank sweeps came just a day after a conference in London on Palestinian reform.
