Powell criticizes EU military plan
BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Washington has strengthened its opposition to European Union plans on military policy.
"The United States cannot accept independent EU structures that duplicate existing NATO capabilities," U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said in a statement for a meeting of ministers from NATO countries in Brussels.
He also urged NATO to take a greater role in rebuilding Iraq. "We urge the alliance to examine how it might do more to support peace and stability in Iraq, which every leader has acknowledged is critical to all of us," his statement, obtained by Reuters, said.
