LONDON, England (CNN) -- Sophie, Countess of Wessex has been reunited with her six-day old daughter after the newest member of Britain's royal family left a specialist baby unit at a London hospital.
The baby was taken back to Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey midday Friday where she was born to join her mother, who has been a patient at the hospital since the birth last weekend. Sophie is the wife of Britain's Prince Edward, youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II.
Later the prince visited mother and baby and talked of the couple's "fantastic joy."
He said: "The important thing is that this has been a fantastic day in our lives, a day of great relief and joy and it's difficult to explain what it is to be together as a family for the first time."
A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said that the countess, 38, was "hugely excited" to see her baby again. Both mother and baby were said to be progressing well.
The unnamed baby had been sent to the neo-natal unit of St. George's Hospital in south London as a precaution after being born several weeks premature. She weighed in at 4 pounds 9 ounces.
A spokeswoman told the UK's Press Association Friday: "There is no cause for concern."
Edward was on an official visit to Mauritius when the birth occurred. He flew home immediately and has been visiting his wife at Frimley Park Hospital each day.
As well as visiting Sophie each day, Edward has also been travelling to south London to see the baby.
Friday's move means both mother and daughter are just a five-minute drive from his home.
There was no further update on when the Countess will be well enough to leave the hospital.
Earlier this week Buckingham Palace said that Sophie, who suffered a potentially life-threatening ectopic pregnancy two years ago, would be staying in hospital "for the foreseeable future."
The girl is the seventh grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and is eighth in line for the throne.
