Remains found in U.S helicopter crash in Italy
ROME, Italy (CNN) -- The remains of three U.S. servicemen were found after a fiery helicopter crash on the Italian island of Sicily Wednesday, the U.S. Navy said in a statement. A fourth serviceman onboard is feared dead and the search for him was postponed until Thursday morning because of darkness, the statement said. The MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter, carrying members of the HC-4 support squadron back to the Sigonella military base in Sicily after a training mission, crashed on land about 10 miles southwest of base at about 5 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET), military officials said. Italian media said the helicopter caught fire after impact, and quoted a witness who described seeing white smoke and then black smoke coming from the helicopter before the crash, which, according to the reports, is a telltale sign of mechanical failure. Firefighting crews from the U.S. put out flames at the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Names of the personnel killed were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
