LONDON, England -- An actress who stars in a popular hospital "soap" on British TV was in critical condition Monday after falling from a balcony.

Laura Sadler, 22, who plays a nurse in Holby City, was in a "critical" condition in hospital after she was found by police at the foot of a house in Holland Park, West London, on Sunday after plunging 40 feet.

British actor George Calil, 30 -- who plays her on-screen boyfriend -- was arrested on Sunday in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

"Our thoughts are with her and her family at this difficult time," a spokeswoman for the cast and crew from the popular show said. They were all willing Sadler to pull through, she added.

Neighbors spoke of their shock and disbelief. "I feel very sad, I think it's heartbreaking," one 57-year-old retired widow told the UK Press Association.

Another neighbor, a 35-year-old mother of two said: "I cannot believe it ... This is just a very peaceful area, there are a lot of ex-patriots who live here, a lot of bankers and a lot of people from overseas."

A spokeswoman for Charing Cross Hospital, London -- where the actress is being treated -- said Thursday: "I can confirm that she is here and she is in critical condition. She is in the intensive care unit."

Calil plays Sadler's on-screen drug dealing boyfriend in the hospital soap that attracts millions of viewers each week.

Sadler has appeared in TV programmes Inspector Morse, Jane Eyre, Ruth Rendell Mysteries and Belfry Witches.

The British-born actress made her TV debut in the children's program, Grange Hill.
