Four terror suspects held in Italy
MILAN, Italy (CNN) -- Two Kurds, an Egyptian and a Somali suspected of being affiliated with Ansar al Islam, the group in northern Iraq linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terror network, have been arrested, police say. They are accused of facilitating the transfer of Kurds who wanted to go to Europe, or back to Northern Iraq via Syria, national Italian police officials said Tuesday. National police sources told CNN the arrests took place on Monday as the four were preparing to leave Italy for Iraq. The four men were under surveillance by the police who tapped their phones for several months. Police say there were numerous conversations between the suspects and northern Iraq. The phone calls stopped right before the U.S.-led attacks on Iraq, but resumed "a few days before the arrests." The four suspects face charges of being affiliated with an international terrorist organization, a new law that came about after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. -- CNN's Flavia Taggiasco contributed to this report.
