Arrests after bombs found in UK
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Three men have been arrested in connection with the discovery of two homemade bombs in a flat near Gatwick airport south of London. The three men, taken into custody under Britain's anti-terrorism laws, are understood to be non-UK west Europeans, aged 41, 38 and 35. The 41-year-old was arrested in connection with an unrelated criminal matter on Tuesday. Following his arrest, police searched the flat and found the devices. The flat is located over a row of shops in Langley Green, Crawley, West Sussex. The two other men were arrested at the scene. All three were being held under the Terrorism Act 2000. Twenty-five properties were evacuated as officers searched the scene. Police and airport officials denied any link between the incident and the nearby airport -- London's second biggest after Heathrow. "Police and bomb disposal experts are continuing to search the premises where the devices were found. The men have not been linked to any specific groups or targets," a Sussex police spokeswoman said. Residents who live nearby told the UK Press Association they believed the men worked at Gatwick. One said: "They often came back wearing airport-style clothes as if they were cleaners or something. They looked Portuguese and spoke Portuguese." Britain is on heightened alert for terrorism strikes ahead of an imminent war with Iraq. Dozens of people have been arrested in recent months by anti-terror police. Several arrests followed the discovery of traces of the deadly ricin poison in a London flat in January. Prime Minister Tony Blair's government has issued repeated warnings that Britain may face a terrorist attack. Last month, the government deployed hundreds of soldiers at London's Heathrow airport and stepped up security at other airports after police warned of a possible al Qaeda attack.
