Blast rocks gas station in Karachi
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A powerful explosion ripped through a Shell petrol station in Karachi, leaving at least 12 people badly burned, authorities said.
Police believe the blast at the station, which provides gasoline and compressed natural gas for vehicle fuel, was accidental.
"It is not a bomb explosion," Tariq Jameel, a deputy inspector general of police, told Reuters.
He said the blast appeared to have been caused by a fault in a compressed natural gas facility at the station.
A roof above the gas pumps collapsed in the blast. Rescuers raced to the scene and pulled people out of the debris.
A fire that started after the blast was swiftly extinguished.
