Disasters and Accidents

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- At least 20 people drowned and dozens are missing after a boat capsized in the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh state in southern India.

The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Monday, Krishna district officials said, as the boat was making its way along its usual route between two islands in the river, about 300 km (160 miles) south of the state capital Hyderabad.

Fifteen people managed to swim to safety, officials said.

Around 60 people, mainly women and school children, were believed to be onboard the boat, leading to suggestions the small craft was overcrowded, contributing to the capsizing.

Rescue operations to locate the missing have been hampered by heavy rain, the officials added.
