SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- Four civilians working for the Indian army have been killed by heavy shelling in northern Kashmir, a military spokesman said Saturday.
The attack took place Friday in the town of Taad in Kupwara district -- about 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Srinagar, Kashmir's Summer capital. Two others were injured.
The Indian army said shelling began around 2 p.m. local time and went on until late evening. Indian forces returned fire.
Elsewhere near the Pakistan-India border, three people were killed and five people were injured Saturday when an unexploded shell detonated near the Pakistan city of Sialkot. Police are investigating the incident.
Kashmir has been at the center of tensions between India and Pakistan for more than five decades.
The two nuclear-armed rivals have fought two of their three wars over the territory, and came close to fighting another last year.
India accuses Pakistan of providing funding and other support to militants carrying out terrorist attacks on Indian territory.
Pakistan denies the accusation, saying it only gives moral support to the Kashmiri people's right to self-determination.
