India searches for PM intruder
NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Indian police are searching for a car that intruded on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's motorcade, prompting the leader's security detail to open fire on the vehicle. There were no reports of injuries in the incident, which occurred late Monday as Vajpayee was returning from New Delhi's airport after a trip to Mumbai. Police said a white Suzuki passenger car tried to work its way into the motorcade about midnight Monday. It sped away after officers of India's National Security Guard, which protects the prime minister, opened fire at the vehicle. Authorities have set up checkpoints on the outskirts of the city to prevent the driver from escaping while they search. Vajpayee's security detail had been on higher alert since last week, when another car collided with a vehicle carrying the prime minister's bodyguards. That crash was blamed on dense fog. Authorities would not comment on whether they were re-examining the circumstances after Monday night's incident. -- CNN Correspondent Suhasini Haidar contributed to this report.
