TAIPEI, Taiwan (Reuters) -- Thirteen people were killed and 68 injured in a fire at a residential building in the outskirts of Taipei on Sunday, police said.

The fire started at around one o'clock in the morning (1700 GMT) and was brought under control by 2.45 a.m., a police officer in charge of fire fighting in Taipei County told Reuters.

The fire apparently originated from a motorcycle on the ground floor though it was not clear exactly how it began.

"We are still investigating the cause of the fire but we know it started from a motorcycle on the ground floor," the officer said.

All residents of the seven-storey apartment building in Lu Chou in Taipei County had been evacuated and the fire was extinguished shortly after 4 a.m. (2000 GMT), he said.
