BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A bomb dropped by a U.S. warplane missed its intended target in southern Afghanistan early Wednesday, killing 11 civilians and wounding another, a U.S. military statement said.
The incident happened near the border with Pakistan on the outskirts of Shkin in Paktika province as coalition forces pursued enemy fighters.
U.S. Marine Corps Harrier jets had been called in following an attack on an Afghan Militia Force (AMF) checkpoint.
A 1,000-pound, laser-guided bomb, intended for the enemy forces, missed its target and instead landed on a house.
The circumstances of the incident are under review, a Pentagon spokesman told CNN.
Four wounded AMF soldiers have been evacuated to a nearby U.S. base for medical treatment as was the wounded civilian.
