Explosion rocks Karachi plaza

Story Tools

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- An explosion struck the top floor of a Karachi office complex Friday evening, police said.

The building was empty at the time, and there were no known casualties, authorities said.

The Karachi police chief said it was not a large blast.

It was not immediately known if the explosion was terrorism-related.

The same building, near the city's international airport, was struck by an explosive placed outside the main entrance in July. That blast killed a security guard and another worker. Authorities called that incident an act of terrorism.

Islamic militant groups have carried out numerous attacks in the area.

Friday's blast came about 8 p.m. (11 a.m. ET), on the 10th floor of the building in eastern Karachi. The lower floors are used for businesses, but the top floor is vacant.

Windows were shattered, but there was not much structural damage.

--CNN Islamabad Bureau Chief Ash-har Quraishi contributed to this report
