LAGOS, Nigeria -- Detonators have been found at the site where a blast tore through a bank in Lagos killing 35 people, police say.

A total of 10 detonators were found by bomb disposal experts amid the rubble of the bank and surrounding apartment blocks which had been flattened by Sunday's blast.

Eight people have also been arrested, including the bank's manager and people allegedly seen digging at the devastated site.

Police were quoted on Thursday as saying they increasingly suspect that criminals or people involved in illegal stockpiling or manufacture of explosives were responsible for the explosion, although they have not ruled out an accident, Reuters reported.

"They found commercial detonators yesterday, about 10 of them," Assistant Inspector General of Police Adebayo Adeoye said.

"They are not bombs but devices they use in detonating explosives to blast rocks or other things."

He added that those arrested had claimed to be digging a borehole at the time.

"We are not drawing any conclusions yet until the bomb disposal squad sifting through the site submit their report later today."
