LAGOS, Nigeria -- At least 30 people were killed in an explosion that destroyed a bank and an apartment block in Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos.

The cause of the blast has not been established but police were considering the possibility that someone was using explosives in an attempted bank robbery, The Associated Press reported.

Looters ran from the destroyed bank after Sunday's blast with fistfuls of money as police fired into the air to prevent further ransacking.

Nigerian Red Cross president Emmanuel Ijewere said 30 bodies had been found in the rubble but added the death count could rise further.

Lagos State Commissioner of Information Dele Alake told Reuters it was still possible that survivors may be found in the destroyed buildings.

A full investigation has been launched into the blast which flattened one high rise that was a mixture of businesses and residential apartments. Adjoining buildings were also damaged.

Cranes and heavy lifting equipment have arrived at the site to move concrete slabs and other rubble.

Rescuers worked through the night searching for survivors as armed police guarded the site.

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo flew in from the capital, Abuja, to visit the blast site. He has so far made no comment.
