(CNN) -- Tropical depression Grace, downgraded Sunday from a tropical storm, was dumping heavy rain on the upper Texas coast as it moved inland, the National Weather Service said.

The stormy weather was expected to abate in Texas later in the day. Grace moved into Texas about 10 a.m. EDT around Port O'Connor, preceded by rain and wind on the upper Texas coast. Grace was heading northeast at 15 mph. Tropical storm warnings were lifted late Sunday morning.

Maximum winds had decreased to 35 mph, and the storm was expected to weaken in the next 24 hours.

Up to 6 inches of rain had fallen in Galveston and Harris counties, and up to another 9 inches were possible in parts of eastern Texas and western Louisiana.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Fabian -- with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph -- was expected to pass well north of the Leeward Islands in the next day or two.
