Tornadoes hit Kansas City areaDozens of homes destroyed; storms moving east
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (CNN) -- A large tornado and several smaller tornadoes hit the Kansas City metro area late Sunday afternoon, destroying dozens of homes. The funnel of one tornado was reported to be 400 yards wide. Early reports indicated injuries, but there were no details available. There were no immediate reports of deaths. Local television stations reported a tornado on the ground in southern Leavenworth County, Kansas, moving toward the Missouri border. Live images from news helicopters showed significant damage to homes. Large trees were toppled and roofs were blown off. The storm system has moved east, producing tornadoes in other communities. In Missouri, the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for northern Jackson and Clay counties in the Kansas City area -- and for Buchanan County, about 60 miles to the north. In Kansas, warnings were issued for Linn and Miami counties in Kansas, south of the Kansas City metropolitan area, and for Labette County in southeast Kansas. Severe weather was reported across the Plains states Sunday afternoon. Hail as big as baseballs pitched down onto some areas, The Associated Press reported. On Saturday, a severe weather system spanning 140 miles of Texas resulted in at least three tornados that touched down in the remote county of Haskell, according to the National Weather Service's office in Fort Worth. (Full story) The tornados touched down in open farmland, and the only reported damage was a car hit by flying debris, meteorologist Joe Harris said. There were also reports of baseball-size hail south of Haskell County.
