MODESTO, California (CNN) -- Scott Peterson says he's expanding the search for his missing wife -- even as speculation builds that he might be involved with her disappearance.

Sunday, Scott Peterson was handing out fliers with his pregnant wife's picture on them in Los Angeles. He said moving there from Modesto was part of his effort to expand the search.

"If you go to Modesto, you see in every store -- every corner -- there are posters everywhere," Scott Peterson said. "We simply have to expand the geographical area. So we'll do it here, we'll do it in San Diego next weekend, and we'll continue to expand until we find her."

Laci Peterson was last reported seen Christmas Eve, when her husband said he bid her good-bye as he left for a solo fishing trip 85 miles away from the couple's home. Laci is due to deliver a baby boy February 10.

Members of Laci Peterson's family have been grappling with revelations from police that Scott Peterson might have been having an affair and was photographed with another woman days before Laci vanished. He has called reports of an affair a "bunch of lies."

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for the missing woman's family, said Modesto police showed the family the photographs Wednesday, before they were published in a national tabloid magazine.

One of the pictures was dated on a day in mid-December when Peterson had told his wife he was at a business appointment, a source close to the family told CNN.

A source close to Laci Peterson's family said police told them that Scott took out a $250,000 life insurance policy on his wife shortly after the couple learned she was pregnant last summer.

Husband's relatives stand by him

Scott Peterson's relatives are standing behind him and brushing aside suggestions that he might have been involved in foul play.

"Our family is committed to and will remain focused on our search," said Janey Peterson, who's married to Scott Peterson's brother.

"Scott Peterson has our absolute and complete support, and we do not believe any speculation that he was involved in Laci's disappearance," she said. "From the beginning, Scott's No. 1 priority has been the safe return of his wife and child, and that remains unchanged."

Joe Peterson, Scott's older brother, said the allegations have taken a visible toll.

"He's got good days and bad days, mostly bad days, but he's staying focused and staying strong because of the support that he's getting," Joe Peterson said.

While the speculation is difficult, he said, "it's harder knowing he doesn't have his wife and his baby. That's harder than the speculation. We can't do anything about that other information that gets out there."

Police have not named Scott Peterson as a suspect in his wife's disappearance, but they have not ruled out anyone, either.

"The family is asking Scott to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen, spokeswoman for Laci Peterson's family, said. "And if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."
