MIDLAND, Texas (CNN) -- A mother who told police she "wanted the devil out of her child" was charged with capital murder Thursday in the death of her 3-year-old daughter, whom authorities believe was intentionally drowned.

Chrystal Hill, 30, is being held on $1 million bond.

Midland Police spokeswoman Tina Jauz said police got a call Thursday morning from a man who said his wife had locked herself in their apartment with their two children.

"The man said she had been (mentally) unstable," Jauz said.

Police were able to get the woman to open the apartment door. When they went inside, Hill was holding an 18-month-old boy in her arms and 3-year-old Krysta was lying in the living room, all wet.

The young girl was rushed to the hospital but medical teams couldn't revive her. An autopsy will be performed Friday morning to determine the exact cause of death, officials said.

Hill's husband, Anthony, 28, was not charged. The 18-month-old child has been put into the custody of children's protective services, officials said.
