HEWITT, Texas (CNN) -- A charter bus with a church group crossed an interstate median south of Waco on Friday morning and rammed a sport utility vehicle head-on, killing seven and injuring more than 20, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said.

The bus, carrying 33 members of the Memorial Baptist Church in Temple, was headed to a gospel concert in the Dallas area, according to Gail Koontz, a church spokeswoman.

The bus, operated by Central Texas Trails, a regional Waco-based bus line, was traveling north on Interstate 35 near Hewitt when the driver lost control, crossed the median and struck the southbound SUV, according to the public safety department.

The bus ended up on its side.
