(CNN) -- Two men have been charged with robbery in connection with the abduction of a U.S. senator's wife in Fairfax County, Virginia, officials said Friday.

Suspects Michael Pierre of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Christopher Forbes, who doesn't have an address, were arrested Wednesday and will remain in custody in Carteret, New Jersey, authorities in Virginia said.

Officials said they have asked New Jersey authorities to keep the two men in custody until arrangements can be made for extradition to suburban Virginia where Kathleen Gregg was abducted from her home and robbed on Tuesday.

Gregg is the wife of U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg, R - New Hampshire, but federal authorities said prosecutors have reviewed federal laws and no federal charges are imminent.

Gregg told police she was abducted from her suburban Washington home at knifepoint by two men. She was taken to a McLean, Virginia, bank and forced to withdraw funds. She escaped unharmed.

She escaped unharmed, although police said the suspects tied Gregg in her home before she agreed to accompany them to the nearby bank.

Pierre and Forbes were arrested in New Jersey after their stolen vehicle was seen in an area under police surveillance for illegal drug trafficking, authorities said.

Before their arrest, the men were both considered suspects in two other crimes because of evidence linking the crimes.

A man captured on a bank surveillance tape during Gregg's abduction was identified by a witness as the accomplice of a man who tried to force his way into her home in Arlington on Monday, said Arlington County Police Department spokesman Matt Martin.

The car used in both incidents was linked to a third incident involving an attempt to rob a jogger Tuesday morning in Alexandria, police said. In all three incidents, witnesses described a white man and black man working together.

Fairfax County officials said they did not know when additional charges would be filed, or when the men would be returned to Virginia for trial.

The suspect identified by Fairfax County police as Christopher Forbes is known by Carteret authorities as Christopher Ford.

Fairfax police used the name Forbes because they have a file on a man named Christopher Forbes whose description matches that of the man detained in Carteret, said Fairfax County police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings.

"It's very early in the process," said Jennings. "The FBI is still processing fingerprints so we can be absolutely certain the man identified in New Jersey as Christopher Ford is in fact the Christopher Forbes we are charging with robbery."

On Thursday, New Jersey authorities charged the pair with possession of stolen property, auto theft, aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
