Gunman opens fire at Nashville office

Police: Suspect barricaded inside building

(CNN) -- A gunman Friday entered a video production company in Nashville, Tennessee, firing multiple rounds and barricading himself inside, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear if anyone inside was shot. Dozens of SWAT team members in assault gear surrounded the Electric Picture Co. building, while others entered with guns drawn.

Some employees were evacuated from the building.

"Shots were fired before police officers arrived on the scene. The SWAT team is clearing the building," said Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Nashville Police Department.

"The gunman is believed to still be inside. The SWAT team is also checking for possible victims of these gunshots. The motive for this is still being investigated. This is still a very active situation right now."

Fire Department spokesman Charles Shannon said, "We do have one person barricaded inside; shots have been fired."

He said negotiations were under way with the gunman.

At nearby St. Edwards Elementary School, students were hustled from the playground into the school after shots were fired, said the Rev. Joseph Breen.

The school went into lockdown soon afterward.

"Everybody seems to be safe from any type of harm," Breen said. "When we found out what it was, we put them inside. ... We just hope everybody else is safe, too."
