WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A vehicle taking Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to an air base in Maryland was involved in a minor traffic accident in Washington, officials said Tuesday.
Rumsfeld's security guards were quoted as saying that he was shaken up but not injured.
Defense officials said the incident occurred while Rumsfeld's motorcade was en route to Andrews Air Force Base from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
The fire officials said the crash took place when an Isuzu SUV ran into a highway barricade, veered back into traffic, striking another vehicle, and then hit Rumsfeld's Lincoln Navigator head-on. It is not known what caused the SUV to hit the barricade.
By the time emergency vehicles arrived at the scene, the secretary had been taken to another car in his motorcade and driven to Andrews, fire officials said.
The drivers of the other two vehicles were taken to two hospitals in Washington. The seriousness of their injuries is unknown.
Washington police are investigating the incident.
Rumsfeld was heading to New York City for a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations. He arrived in New York on time, with no visible injuries.
