'World's Biggest Cookie' in works
FLAT ROCK, North Carolina (CNN) -- A company in Flat Rock, North Carolina -- about 25 miles south of Asheville in the hilly western region of the state -- is seeking to create the world's largest cookie. Scott Blackwell, the head of the Immaculate Baking Co., which is making and baking the mammoth chocolate chip cookie, says the idea came about as a fundraiser for the area's Folk Artist's Foundation. A group of supporters decided to launch a drive for a Folk Art Museum, and to attract attention, Immaculate decided to build the world's biggest cookie -- 100 feet in diameter. Good old-fashioned American pride entered the picture, too, the company says in a press release. The current record, 81 feet, is held by a New Zealand firm. "Since New Zealand holds the record for a cookie based on an American recipe, we feel that it's only right to bring that honor back to the USA," a "World's Biggest Cookie" promotional guide says. Among the ingredients: 12,200 pounds of unbleached flour, 6,525 pounds of unsalted butter, 5,000 pounds of sugar, 3,370 pounds of brown sugar, 6,000 pounds of chocolate chunks, and -- of course -- 10 gallons of vanilla, give or take a teaspoon. The finished product is estimated to weigh 40,000 pounds, and has required the construction of a special oven next to Immaculate's Flat Rock bakery. The project has the approval of the Guinness Book of World Records. The celebration and baking of the cookie is scheduled to take place May 17. No word on whether any celebrities, such as "Sesame Street's" Cookie Monster, will attend.
