Weapons found in state building

TAMPA, Florida (CNN) -- Authorities removed a rifle, ammunition and a grenade from a state government building Monday in downtown Tampa, a federal agency said.

A maintenance worker reported finding the items while he was clearing out a storage area, said Carlos Bauxauli, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.

The grenade will be tested to see if it is live, Bauxauli said. A rifle, two boxes of ammunition and three empty rifle boxes were also taken into custody.

Bauxauli would not confirm reports the owner of the items was a current employee. He said the ATF was questioning several people in the incident.

It was not clear how long the weapons might have been in the storage area, he said.

Employees returned to their desks after the building was evacuated for several hours.

The maintenance worker found the items about 8 a.m. at the Park Trammell building in downtown Tampa. He pulled a fire alarm to clear the building.

Park Trammell houses several state agencies, including Florida Child and Family Services and a driver's license bureau. The building is at 1313 Tampa Street.

Tampa Fire Capt. Bill Wade told CNN fire officials did not believe the incident was connected to terrorism.

CNN's Susan Candiotti, John Couwels and Patrick Oppmann contributed to this report.
