Weekend shootings worry Baltimore cops
BALTIMORE, Maryland (CNN) -- Baltimore police Sunday were investigating a string of shootings that left five people dead and three injured in less than 48 hours. In all there were five shootings. The first was a double-shooting early Saturday morning and the most recent was a shooting Sunday afternoon, said officer Nicole Malone. "Of course it concerns us, but it's the beginning of the year, and hopefully these are just random acts of violence and not indicative of the whole year," she said. Police do not believe the shootings are connected, in part because some of them happened too far apart within too short a time span, Malone said. Investigators have not identified a suspect in any of the shootings, she said. The first shooting happened Saturday morning at 12:55 a.m. in east Baltimore. Two men were shot, and one of them died as a result of his injuries, Malone said. Around 7 p.m. Saturday, police answered a call in southwest Baltimore and found a man shot multiple times. He died after being taken to the hospital. An hour and a half later, two teenage boys standing on a street corner in northwest Baltimore were approached by someone who opened fire on them, Malone said. One of them, a 15-year-old, survived. But his 16-year-old friend, whom friends took to the hospital, died of his wounds. The next shooting happened at 3:30 a.m. Sunday in southeast Baltimore at a Teamsters Union hall, which had been rented out for a function. As the event was letting out, shots rang out from a white Chevrolet Celebrity with tinted windows, Malone said. Two people were shot; one was killed and the other suffered minor injuries, she said. Twenty minutes later a man was found dead in northwest Baltimore from gunshot wounds. A homicide detective with the Baltimore Police Department said the weekend death toll brings to seven the number of people killed in the city since January 1. Last year, he said, the city's first killing was on January 5.
