Turnpike Installs Safety System
(WGAL) -- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is investing in about $20 million worth of equipment to help keep drivers safe.
With nearly 180 million drivers using the toll road each year, the commission is using high-tech gadgets to alert motorists to construction zone changes, severe weather and traffic accidents.
So far, the commission said it's halfway through installing an intelligent transportation systems network.
Video cameras will provide real-time views of the turnpike. Weather stations will monitor for fog and hail and snow. The system will even be able to detect and caution trucks that are moving too fast to safely handle a bend.
