NEW YORK (CNN) -- The record for the world's largest picnic was broken Sunday when 1,325 people gathered in Manhattan's Bryant Park, event organizers said.
The final tally broke the previous record of 1,059 people at a picnic held in England on October 18, 2002.
"Everything was uncertain because of the weather," said Lenny Barszap of The Unbelievable Show, a New York television comedy program that organized the picnic. "We were anticipating 3,000 to 5,000 people."
Organizers worked with officials from the Guinness Book of World Records to meet their requirements. To qualify for the event, attendees had to bring at least two food items and a drink. The count was verified by a sign-in sheet.
In addition to breaking the world record, organizers also collected more than 300 pounds of food to be donated to the charity City Harvest.
The weather cooperated until the last minute, Barszap said.
"Literally, as we announced the number, that we had broken the record, thunder clapped and it started to rain," he said.
Bryant Park sits behind the New York Public Library in midtown Manhattan.
