Officials hail kids' quick actions in fire

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (WRTV) -- Fire officials praised three children for moving quickly away from a fire that ended up destroying their apartment and damaging two other apartment units on the city's northwest side Tuesday.

The fire began shortly before noon at The Kensington Apartments, located near the intersection of 86th Street and Ditch Road, officials said.

No injuries were reported. Officials said only one unit -- the home of the three siblings -- contained people when the fire began, and no one was renting one of the other damaged units.

When the fire started, the children -- ages 8, 9 and 10 -- were home alone while their mother was at an appointment, RTV6's Vicki Duncan reported.

A short in a bathroom fan in the family's unit apparently sparked the flames, according to investigators.

Officials gave special recognition to T.J. Jackson (pictured, right), 9, who they said got his two siblings moving toward an exit when a fire alarm sounded.

A fire department is not far from the complex, and firefighters arrived at the apartment just as the kids were about to exit, a firefighter said. T.J. said he knew what to do during a fire because he was taught at school and by his grandmother.

"We get into every school and we teach what you're supposed to do when you hear a smoke detector, and it's obvious those kids learned that lesson well," the fire department's Joe Anderson said

The children and their mother will be given the option to stay in a local hotel for a few days, Duncan reported.

To help the family or other people displaced by fire, people can donate gently used items to the Peoples Burn Foundation, which can be contacted at (317) 803-2876.
