Woman found stabbed, two children slain
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- A man suffocated his two children in his home then went to his estranged wife's apartment and stabbed her repeatedly, police said Tuesday. The woman was critically injured. Michael Walker, 38, was being held on $1.5 million bond on charges of murder and attempted murder, Police Chief Kim Wadding said. Emergency crews responding to a 911 call Monday evening found Karen M. Walker, 34, in her apartment, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was in critical condition in a hospital Tuesday. Police said they arrested Michael Walker two blocks away, where he had been seen walking with what appeared to be blood on his hands and torso. A search of Walker's home found the couple's two children, Lindsay, 9, and Jordan, 8. They appeared to have been suffocated earlier Monday evening, police said. Wadding said the couple was separated and shared custody of the children. One of the stabbed woman's downstairs neighbors said she heard screams about 9 p.m. Monday, but thought it was coming from a television, or children chasing each other. "She was saying, 'Please don't do this, please don't do this,"' Kane said. Michael Walker, who grew up in Emporia, Kansas, is the brother of Gazette Publisher Christopher White Walker and son of the newspaper's owners, Barbara and David Walker. "We're saddened by this tragic loss and our thoughts and prayers go to everyone involved," Christopher Walker said. Michael Walker was being represented by a Dubuque County public defender who could not immediately be reached. Copyright 2003 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
