DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) -- A man who abandoned his 3-year-old stepson in a department store shopping cart in Utah in January and was a suspect in the disappearance of the boy's mother has apparently committed suicide, authorities said Thursday.
Police said Lyle Montgomery, 42, shot himself to death on Tuesday, one day after being released from jail on charges he had pulled a knife on the boy's mother, Jeanette Corpuz, before the couple wed in December.
"He has apparently killed himself from a gunshot wound," a spokeswoman for the Washoe County sheriff's office said.
Pictures of the little Jonathan Jacob Corpuz were seen nationwide and someone in Nevada, where the boy lived with his mom and Montgomery, recognized the child and contacted police. Surveillance video from the Utah store showed a stocky man walking into the store on Jan. 25 with the boy and leaving moments later without him.
Jeanette Corpuz has not been seen since Jan 13 and police have said they suspect foul play.
The child is now living with his biological father in California.
