Postal service charters 747s for troop mail
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Postal Service has chartered two Boeing 747 cargo jets to deliver a huge amount of mail -- 750,000 pounds each week -- to U.S. troops deployed in the Middle East, a USPS statement said Saturday. One plane flies to the military's postal system in Kuwait from the U.S. East Coast six days a week; the other flies three days a week from the West Coast, the statement said. The Postal Service said military mail volume has jumped from 21,000 pounds per week in October to more than 750,000 pounds per week in March. Paul Vogel, USPS vice president of network operations, cautioned that "customers have to understand, because the troops are constantly on the move, this is very much a 'moving mailbox' situation." About one-third of the Postal Service's 740,000 employees has a military background. So far, more than 4,000 of its 12,500 workers who serve in the Reserves or National Guard have been called to active duty.
