U.S. warns about travel in Laos
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. State Department has advised Americans not to travel in certain areas of Laos until further notice. In a written statement Thursday, the department cited recent attacks around Sam Neua, the capital of the northern province of Huaphan, and at least three other bomb attacks over the past month that targeted buses and bus stations in Vientiane and southern Laos, resulting in death and injury to civilians. The State Department said it also had received reports of small-scale attacks by anti-government groups in isolated areas along the southern border with Thailand. "In light of recent attacks in the Vang Vieng-Kasi area, especially along Route 13, we recommend that American citizens avoid travel by road between Vang Vieng and Luang Phrabang," the warning said. "We also recommend that travelers avoid activities in the surrounding areas of Vang Vieng." Such attacks have led the Laotian government to shut down telecommunications and stop travel on main roads for up to several days, the statement added.
