Travel warnings issued for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Citing security concerns, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning Thursday for Americans in or traveling to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, nations which share a border with Iraq.

Neither warning mentions Iraq, but they come at a time of heightened U.S.-Iraq tensions.

The State Department also authorized family members of State Department personnel to leave voluntarily.

The warning for Kuwait reminds travelers that three U.S. citizens have been killed in the country in four months. The most recent was January 21, when a civilian U.S. government contractor was killed in an ambush on a car near Camp Doha.

Both warnings say they were issued "to alert Americans to increased security concerns," according to the State Department. The warnings go on to say that American citizens "should evaluate rigorously their own security situations and should consider departing."

The government warned Americans to "carefully consider the increased risks" of travel in the countries and cited potential terrorist actions against Americans in the Middle East, including the Persian Gulf region.

U.S. citizens who decide to remain in either country are encouraged to register with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy or at the Consulates, the department said.
