Computer failure delays flights at Miami airportDeparting aircraft grounded about an hour
MIAMI, Florida (CNN ) -- A computer failure at a Miami air traffic control station grounded departing aircraft at Miami International Airport for almost an hour Sunday afternoon, officials said. The malfunction occurred about 4:15 p.m. Sunday at the FAA's Miami Enroute Center, which controls airspace over most of South Florida, FAA spokesman Christopher White said. The problem was resolved about 5 p.m., he said. "During that time, no departures were allowed, and arrivals were still permitted," he said. The Miami Enroute Center controls air traffic from 40 miles outside Miami to just south of Tampa, White said. American Airlines, the largest carrier at Miami International, said the delays affected about 120 of its aircraft. American spokesman Todd Burke said delays were about an hour for departing flights and 45 minutes for arrivals, but no flights were canceled.
