Daniel Sieberg: Fun before big game
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The hype over Super Bowl XXXVII has been building up all week, and many fans are impatiently waiting for Sunday's kickoff. CNN Technology Correspondent Daniel Sieberg on Saturday looked at some of the latest video games that will help fans get into the competition without getting off the couch. SIEBERG: Everybody's hearing about the Super Bowl, predictions about the Super Bowl, but what about the tech bowl? If you're a video game fan out there, this is about the time of year where you're getting what we call gamer's thumb -- using controllers so much, you're developing blisters by playing all of the football games. We want to [mention] some of the games, even demonstrate the realism that's in the games. ... There's NFL 2K3 from Sega, NFL Fever from Microsoft, Madden 2003 by Electronic Arts, NFL Blitz from Midway. You can play on the Nintendo Game Cube, your Xbox, your PlayStation 2. Any of these game systems have one or more football games to play. We have Sega's NFL 2K3 hooked up to demonstrate the realism that goes into the games. We have set up a simulation of the Super Bowl with Oakland and Tampa Bay playing at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. I am on offense, and every time I play this live, I throw an interception. We're hoping it doesn't happen. They throw as much realism as they can into the games, from the plays, the size of the players and statistics. I'm running my pattern here, and he dropped the ball, and ... even the player's reaction is realistic. You can create a simulation between the two different teams -- between Oakland and Tampa Bay and see who wins. I did that with NFL Fever, and Tampa won 44-42. Another company that does this is 989 Sports. They recently took their NFL GameDay 2003 and matched up one player from each of the Super Bowl teams to see who wins. Obviously, we don't know who will win in the Super Bowl, but in this competition, Tampa Bay's Keenan McCardell beat Charlie Garner from Oakland 28-8. What is important about this in terms of prognostication and figuring out who wins is that in the seven years that 989 Sports has done this, the team that won in the competition went on to win the Super Bowl. So if you want to put any faith in that or not, that's maybe something to look for coming up on Sunday.
