Report: Best questioned by police
LONDON, England -- Manchester United legend George Best was questioned by police on Friday over an alleged assault, British newspapers reported on Saturday.
The Sun and the Daily Mirror said Best, 57, spent almost 12 hours in custody after being arrested near his home in Surrey, southern England, early on Friday morning.
The newspapers said the incident involved Best's estranged wife Alex.
Surrey police refused to confirm whether Best had been arrested.
"A 57-year-old man from Walton-on-the-Hill was arrested on December 26 in relation to an allegation of assault," a police spokeswoman said.
"The man was released later without charge. No allegations are now being pursued by any party."
The Mirror claimed Alex Best, 31, had invited her estranged husband to the couple's home for Christmas Day lunch.
The pair separated in September after Best had reportedly started drinking alcohol again.
The Northern Irishman underwent a liver transplant last year after decades of alcohol abuse and had vowed not to drink again.
Considered one of the greatest players of all time, Best won the European Cup and the European Footballer of the Year award in 1968 with United but walked out on the club four years later at the age of 26.
