Mali expect Kanoute to play in Cup
LONDON, England -- Mali coach Henri Stambouli has insisted that Tottenham striker Frederic Kanoute is likely to commit himself to play in January's African Nations Cup.
"It is 95 percent certain that Kanoute will play at the Nations Cup finals," Stambouli said.
Kanoute, 26, was born in France and is a former French youth international but is eligible for Mali through his father.
Stambouli added: "There are just a few things left to sort out. I am positive he will make a massive impact on our team."
Tottenham are trying to persuade the striker not to play in the tournament, which could take him away from the Premiership for around five to six weeks.
"Freddie has a dual passport and unfortunately Mali have qualified for the African Nations' Cup," Spurs manager David Pleat said recently.
"Like other managers, I'm doing some twiddling behind the scenes."
Pleat is hoping that Kanoute will pledge himself to France.
The African Nations Cup takes place in Tunisia and runs from January 24 until February 14 next year.
