Santana has part of leg amputated
RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil -- Former Brazil coach Tele Santana, who led his country at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, has had part of his left leg amputated during surgery.
Santana, whose 1982 team was regarded as one of the best ever, is in a stable condition in a hospital in Belo Horizonte.
The 72-year-old had developed ischemia, a decrease in blood supply caused by obstruction of the blood vessels, after an earlier operation last week. The leg had to be amputated below the knee.
Santana has diabetis and was forced into retiring from football in 1996 after he suffered a stroke.
