ROME, Italy -- AC Milan slumped to their first Serie A defeat of the season, 2-1 at home against Udinese, and champions Juventus were held 1-1 by Lecce, leaving Roma with a six-point lead.
Dino Fava put Udinese ahead after just one minute, with Nestor Sensini doubling their lead before Cafu hit back for Milan, who finished the match with 10 men following Kakha Kaladze's dismissal.
On a miserable afternoon for the home fans, Andrea Pirlo also missed a first half penalty.
Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi was brought down by the visitors' goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis, but Pirlo fired his shot against the inside of the post.
It was the midfielder's second wasted penalty in a week, after he was also off target in Milan's shootout defeat by Boca Juniors in last weekend's World Club Cup final.
Six minutes after the interval, Sensini headed in Valerio Bertotto's freekick as Udinese took a two-goal lead.
Cafu narrowed the deficit with 18 minutes to go with a well-placed volley, but Milan's comeback stalled when Georgian Kaladze saw red for swinging a fist at Bertotto.
Juve also finished their match with 10 men following Mark Iuliano's straight red card, but French striker David Trezeguet scored a late equalizer to cancel out Axel Konan's first half strike for Lecce.
Konan put Lecce ahead on 24 minutes with a far post header, and Juve seemed set for defeat when Iuliano brought down Ernesto Chevanton for his second bookable offence.
But Trezeguet latched onto Stephan Appiah's high pass to slot the ball home.
Roma won 2-0 at Empoli on Saturday. Juve's draw edges them level on points with second-placed Milan.
Fourth-placed Inter Milan wasted the chance to move up to second as they were beaten 2-1 at Lazio.
Christian Vieri gave Inter the lead on 30 minutes against his former side but Bernardo Corradi equalized for the Romans just before halftime.
Inter suffered a further blow on 68 minutes when midfielder Matias Almeyda was sent off and Luciano Zauri grabbed the winner for the home side eight minutes from time.
Lazio's win moved them up to fifth, level on 28 points with Inter.
In other matches on Sunday, Chievo beat Ancona 1-0, Perugia and Brescia drew 2-2, Sampdoria drew 1-1 with Modena and Siena and Bologna shared a goalless draw.
