Coach Maturana breaking new ground
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Francisco Maturana has taken charge of Argentine club Colon less than a month after being sacked as Colombia's national coach.
The 54-year-old Maturana is the first Colombian coach to take charge of an Argentine First Division club.
"We're satisfied with the project which has been presented by Maturana," Colon vice-president Patricio Fleming said after meeting the coach on Friday.
Colon are based in Santa Fe, about 500 kilometres north of Buenos Aires.
They traditionally finish in midtable in the Argentine championship but have a reputation for causing upsets in their stadium, which is known as the Elephants' Graveyard.
Maturana was sacked by Colombia after they picked up only one point in their first four matches in the South American qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup.
It was his fourth time at the helm having led Colombia to the 1990 and 1994 World Cups in previous stints.
He was in charge when they famously beat Argentina 5-0 in Buenos Aires in a World Cup qualifier in 1993 and has also coached the national teams of Ecuador, Peru and Costa Rica.
