LISBON, Portugal -- Portuguese giants Benfica have signed Greek defender Takis Fyssas from Panathinaikos.
Fyssas impressed coach Jose Antonio Camacho during last season's games between Porto and Panathinaikos, and more recently during a friendly between the Lisbon-based team and the Greek national squad.
His contract with Panathinaikos expires in January, but the Athens club reportedly rejected a one million euro offer from Benfica for him in June.
"Fyssas will arrive at the end of December to become a part of the squad," said a spokesman, who did not reveal the length of the deal for the 30-year-old or how much it is worth.
Benfica are currently third in the Portuguese First Division, six points behind champions Porto.
