MUNICH, Germany -- Roy Makaay's 42nd minute penalty threw Bayern Munich a Champions League lifeline as their 1-0 victory over Anderlecht ensured their qualification for the knock-out stages.
The Bundesliga champions needed to win after going into the final round of matches in Group A in bottom spot.
Olympique Lyon clinched top spot in a tight group as Juninho Pernambucano's 86th minute penalty gave them a dramatic 3-2 home victory over Scottish battlers Celtic.
Makaay scored his fifth Champions League goal when he converted from the spot after Claudio Pizarro earned the penalty when he was pushed down by Michal Zewlakow in the box.
Captain Oliver Kahn made a stunning save with time running out to keep his team in the competition.
"We were under so much pressure, we couldn't play well," Kahn said. "It's a Champions League match with everything at stake, you know that anything can happen at any second."
"We pulled back too much in the second half," he said.
General manager Uli Hoeness agreed.
"We played a good first half but then we inexplicably allowed them to get back into the match," Hoeness said.
Bayern dominated the opening minutes, with star midfielder Michael Ballack having several attempts at the Anderlecht goal.
But the best early chance was wasted by Pizarro. The Peruvian collected a neat pass from Ze Roberto and charged into the box, but his goalbound shot was blocked by defender Vincent Kompany.
In the 32nd, Owen Hargreaves saw his free kick spin outside the left Anderlecht post.
Three minutes later, both Makaay and Pizarro failed to connect to a hargreaves free kick cross into the box.
Bixente Lizarazu protected Bayern's lead in the 62nd when he cleared an Aruna Dindane header off the line.
With Anderlecht suddenly becoming more ambitious in attack, Aruna wasted two more chances in rapid succession.
Willy Sagnol, a second half substitute, had his effort blocked by Anderlecht goalkeeper Daniel Zitka with 12 minutes left in the match.
Aruna then failed to connect with a cross and the ball bounced off his chest wide of Kahn's goal.
Kahn collided with his own defender Sammy Kuffour with three minutes left and appeared shaken up, but the captain stayed in goal and saved the victory in injury time by diving to his right to stop substitute Oleg Lachtchouk's bouncing shot with just a few seconds remaining on the clock.
Lyon edge thriller
Lyon topped Group A with 10 points ahead of Bayern Munich on nine and Celtic, who go into the UEFA Cup, with seven points.
Juninho, who set up Lyon's opening goal when he hit the bar and compatriot Giovane Elber headed in after six minutes, also scored their second with a speculative low shot after the break.
That strike in the 52nd minute, a bouncing effort from 35 metres that deceived Celtic goalkeeper Magnus Hedman, put Lyon 2-1 ahead in a pulsating high-tempo Group A encounter that saw the Scots fight back to level twice without reward.
Striker John Hartson equalised with a low shot after 24 minutes and Chris Sutton made it 2-2 against the run of play in the 76th minute to turn the final stages of the match into a tense battle with Lyon needing a win to qualify.
Juninho's penalty, calmly fired low to the goalkeeper's right, came after Bobo Balde handled the ball in the penalty area. The goal ended Celtic's hopes of becoming the first Scottish club to reach the knockout stages.
