FRANKFURT, Germany -- Japan were pitted against Oman, India and Singapore in Group 3 of the Asian qualifying competition for the 2006 World Cup finals.
South Korea, who reached the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup that they co-hosted with Japan, will play against Lebanon, Vietnam and the Maldives in Group 7.
Eight groups of four teams play a league system on a home and away basis. The eight group winners advance to the next stage.
Four teams will automatically qualify for the World Cup, with another going into a play-off.

GROUP 1 -- Iran, Qatar, Jordan, Laos
GROUP 2 -- Uzbekistan, Iraq, Palestine, Taiwan
GROUP 3 -- Japan, Oman, India, Singapore

GROUP 5 -- UAE, Thailand, Yemen, North Korea
GROUP 6 -- Bahrain, Syria, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan
