Bayern recover some pride with win
BERLIN, Germany -- Holders Bayern Munich recovered some pride with a crushing 3-0 win over Bundesliga rivals Hamburg SV in a German Cup third round tie on Wednesday.
The German champions reached the quarterfinals courtesy of a first-half goal from Peru striker Claudio Pizarro and two after the break from Dutch striker Roy Makaay and Bosnian midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic.
Two other Bundesliga sides, Cologne and SC Freiburg, were knocked out by second division teams on Wednesday.
Bayern, lying fourth in the Bundesliga and last in their Champions League group with a game left, controlled the match on a freezing, misty night in Munich and made the most of few opportunities.
Two goals from Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic helped Werder Bremen to a 6-1 demolition of troubled Hertha Berlin in Wednesday's other all-Bundesliga clash.
The result increased the pressure on Hertha coach Huub Stevens, whose team lie second from bottom in the Bundesliga.
Cologne, the bottom club in the elite division, lost on penalties to SpVgg Greuther Fuerth while Freiburg lost 1-0 at VfB Luebeck.
